BLAST FROM THE PAST This
week's blast is non other than our club presi- dent William O'Grady:
William has a long association with Killenaule GAA Club and holds
the record as the only player from Killenaule to win two All-Ireland
minor medals in 1955 and 1956. In the 56 final William emerged
as top scorer when he even outscored the leg- endary Jimmy Doyle
and all of his scores came from play:
William went on to win South titles as a nippy for- ward and also
gave a stint as a wing-back. Later William went on to hold all
positions on the club committee and to this day he still does
his share. He was also a tidy footballer and a talented bad- minton
player also.
William taught for many years in Drangan and many people credit
him for the promotion of hurling in that parish which previously
had been a football stronghold. When injury cut his hurling career
short Williamtook up golf and plays to a very respectable standard.
What a sportsman, take a bow William.
BOTHAR NA SMAOINTH This week
we look back at our minor team of 1965, Although we are approaching
our 125th anniversary we have won very few minor titles. We caused
a major shock in 1965 when we defeated a very fancied Davins team.
Our team was captained from centre back by Paddy Shelly who was
a great prospect for the future. It also featured many players
who would go on to win -rnany more titles with Killenaule, among
them Michael Kelly, Billy Healy, his cousin Pat, Pat Cleary, Michael
Bulfin, and Kevin Carroll. We didn't win a minor title for the
next 24years and hopefully this year's team can emulate the men
of 1965. .
QUIZTIME Each week we will
ask a question which will be based on Killenaule or Killenaule
players. We will start off with an easy question.
QUESTION; Name the only Killenaule player to win Senior hurling
and Senior football medals?
E-mail your answers to Bob at "cillenailejuvgaa@gmail.com.

interest that it has created that everybody wants to join the
Killenaule draw. There is plenty of time- make sure you are in
this week draw this Monday night in the complex.
Tipperary minors
- Hard luck to our county minors on their defeat. Congratulations
to our local man John 0 Dwyer on an outstanding display that kept
Tipperary in the game right to the end with his hurling skills
and free taking. It is hoped that he will feature on the Tipperary
senior team in the not so distant future. Best wishes to our representatives
on the senior team next Sunday.

Visit To Knock
- A full coach left Killenaule on time Sunday, August 2 for Pilgrimage
organised by Cashel and Emly Diocese. Archbishop Dermot Clifford
was Chief Celebrant assisted by Fr. O'Rourke,
Gortnahoe/Glengoole and Fr. Walton C.C. 'I'emplemore Pilgrimage
Director.
Special thanks to Kevin and Kathleen who led the Pilgrimage group
in the rosaries and prayers to and from Knock and to Kevin who
did a reading during the Mass at the basilica and most of all
to those who travelled in the group. More interest should be taken
by Parishioners to support the Diocesan Pilgrimage as attendance
has dropped and it is also very noticeable the small attendance
of clergy.
Thanks to Joe and his capable driver Michael.
A.R.A. The
members of local Active Retirement travelled to Cork on Friday
7th August to attend the Show 'Annie" in the Opera House. Group
left Killenaule lOam and travelled the coast road to Ardmore where
there was a break for a few hours. Luckily the weather was good
and members enjoyed the stroll on the beach and visited some interesting
sites and St. Declan's Well and enjoyed the tea/coffee and scones
at "Breda's" Tea Rooms.
Late afternoon, we travelled on .to Cork where some shopping was
done and after meal, it was time for the Show which was enjoyed
by all arriving home at 12pm. .
Thanks to Eileen and Mary for organising the outing and to Damien
for coach and driver.
BLAST FROM THE PAST
This week's Blast is a man we imported from our near neighbour's
arid great rivals Ballingarry. Better known to all of us as "FLASH",
John Lyons did not get the name because of his speed but because
of his expertise in the electrical business. John came to us in.
the 80's and played an important part in our intermediate team
who dominated the South division in that era. He was also our
top forward when we finally won the senior title in 1988 after
a lapse of 25 years. John was a tough no nonsense forward who
seldom left the field without troubling the umpires. Although
he was very skilful he wasn't afraid to get stuck into the "melee"
or the "schmoozle" when the need arose. John was also a very dedicated
committee member who gave great service to the football committee
especially. When he retired John switched sports and became a
very important cog in the horse racing empire at Ballydoyle where
he is assistant trainer to Aidan O'Brien. Although he played for
us for 15 years, John always remained loyal to his native Ballingarry
and is still an out and out "MUSHA". Take a bow John.
BOTHAR NA SMAOINTHE
Each week we will look back on some defining moments in our history.
First up we go back to Sunday 28th September 1885 when we played
our first every match v Aghabulloge in Cork. As you can imagine
details are very sketchy and there is conflicting accounts as
to the actual result. Having met with officals of the Aghabulloge
club it was decided to call that match a draw and a replay will
take place in Killenaule on the last weekend in September.
The match will be played under the old rules and with the old
hurleys, balls and playing gear. So anyone who wants to take part
would want to start growing a moustache. Next week we will look
back at our minor victory of 1965 .

BLAST FROM THE PAST
- This week's blast is non other than that great man of many tafents
Jim Tierney.
Jim came to us in the 60's from the little village of Rosegreen
as a young man and gave us two decades of outstanding service.
He was a "play-anywhere" Player who excelled at half back, midfield,
half forward and full forward. He played very hard but very fair
and wasn't afraid to put his body on the line, and one instant
that immediately springs to mind was a very courageous tackle
on the great Jim Kehoe in Fethard which prevented a certain goal.
Jim was to break his collarbone in that tackle.
Jim shared in many of our victories in the 60's and 70's and he
also possessed the great skill of taking a sideline cut. Long
before Joe Canning, Jim could cut a ball over the bar from almost
any angle or distance. In his prime he was probably deserving
of a run with the county team, but unfortunately the call never
came. He still remains a keen follower of the game and still posesses
a great knowledge of the modern game.
Apart from hurling Jim is one of the best drummers' one could
meet and rumour has it that Bono asked Jim to join U2 as cover
for Larry Mullen, but Jim turned down the offer as he said that
he never liked being a sub. He also holds the record as being
able to drive 4" nails with two blows of the hammer.
'Take a bow Jim.'
