MOYGLASS CEMETERY MASS A
large crowd gathered to remember their deceased. Visitations to
their loved ones graves were made before the Mass, The main celebrant
of the Mass was our new curate, Fr. Francis, he welcomed everyone
to the Mass. Even though Fr. Francis is ordained 12 years it was
the first time he celebrated a Cemetery Mass. This was very appropriate
as his relations are buried in the graveyard.
First reading and psalm were read by Clare Meehan (nee Healy).
Second reading was read by Helen Hannigan.
Fr. Francis blessed the graves after the gospel. The following
said the Prayers of the Faithful: Delia Healy (nee Carroll), Mrs.
Frank Carroll and Phyllis O'Connell (nee Power). After Holy Communion,
Fr. Francis thanked all those who participated in the Mass, Fas
for bringing the chairs etc., and Paddy for keeping the grounds
looking so lovely. Those who set up the altar and did the flower
arrangements.
Despite the black clouds gathering in the sky, the weather kept
up for the Mass. Those who participated in the Mass were representing
their loved ones who died since the last Cemetery Mass.
May they all rest in peace.

GAA NEWS:
U6 and U8: With the evenings closing in our season is coming
to a close and it is hoped to run a blitz to finish the year.
These players have had a great summer and have played lots of
games so if the weather holds up we will have a big day out soon.
UI0: Our Ul0's are awaiting the fixtures
for their championship and are still busy training every
Wednesday's at 7 p.m.
UI4: We travelled to Dublin last Saturday
and took part in a very enjoyable 11 a side competition.
We were in a very strong group ,but in our final match, we put
up a very brave performance and were very unlucky to be beaten
by a point by a strong team from Clare.
We would like to thank the supporters who travelled.
UI6: We are still awaiting re-fixtures
for our three remaining games, meanwhile the lads are training
with our minors who have alot of very important games coming up.
THE ALL IRELAND FINAL Anyone who watched
the big match will have been proud of the efforts of our local
representatives Declan Fanning and Pat (Festy) Kerwick. These
two lads learned their trade with our juvenile club and their
displays were a credit to the hard work put in when they were
juveniles.
We might be calling on these boys to give a few training sessions
to our young players in the near future.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK This week's award goes
to James Doyle who shone for our U14's in Dublin last week.
BOTHAR NA SMAOINTHE
This week we look back on the match that restored us to our rightful
position as South Senior Champions after a lapse of 25 years.
In the 50's and early 60's Killenaule were the dominant force
in senior hurling and who would have believed that having won
the 1963 South title that we would endure such lean times. In
the late 70's and early 80's we joined with Mullinahone to form
a senior team and contested no fewer than five finals but unfortunatley
we failed to win one.
We were beaten in the 1987 final but were back again the following
year when we met St.Mary's in Fethard. It was an ageing time with
about ten of the team in their 30's so in many ways it was the
last chance saloon. It was a very determined Killenaule team who
took the field that day and after a hard struggle we held off
the challenge of St.Mary's to win by a few points.
When the captain Davy Ahearne lifted the cup their was as much
relief as jubilation. The bulk of this team went on to win two
more titles in the next three years and it was no more than they
deserved.
Best on the day were Tom Shelly, Willie Gleeson, Christy Healy,
Donie O'Connell, Donal McGettigan, Davy Ahearne, Martin Shanahan,
Michael Hassett and John Lyons.
BLAST FROM THE PAST
This week's blast was a member of that team which triumphed in
1988 and was one of the real driving forces of the team. Willie
Gleeson was a tough, tight and tenacious defender who gave many
years of great service to Killenaule. He played juvenile with
Fethard but shot to prominence when he won a Munster U15 hurling
medal with the Killenaule Technical School in 1975, beating Ennis
in the final. If memory serves me correct Willie lined out at
full-forward and it was probably his last game upfront. Willie
was a member of the Killenaule team who dominated the intermediate
championship in the 70's and 80's and seldom if ever gave his
marker a sniff of the ball.
When he retired from playing, Willie still stayed involved and
served on the senior committee and also acted as a selector for
a few years. Willie also represented the club at Scor level when
he showed some fancy footwork on the dancefloor to win a few set-dancing
titles. He was also no stranger to the microphone and when we
had the cup won Willie was known to burst into song, hence the
nickname Boxcar Willie.
He is a great sportsman and a gentleman to his fingertips.
Take a bow Willie.
QUIZ TIME .
The answer to last week's question was Donie O'Connell who played
Senior with Tipperary before he played senior with Killenaule.
THIS WEEK'S QUESTION
IS : Who was the last Killenaule player to be sent
off in a senior Championship match with Tipperary. Text your answer

U10: Our U10's took part in a hurling blitz last Saturday
and had a great day out. Although we didn't qualify for the final
stages we played three very enjoyable matches and we recorded
two draws and one win. Best on the day were Kevin Lawlor, Gavin
Ryan, Adam Morrow and Jack Hayes.
Our thanks to Mullinahone for organising a great day of hurling.
U14: We suffered a defeat at the hands of Moyle Rovers
by one point on the scoreline of 1-6 tol-5. We had our chances
to win but lady luck wasn't on our side. Every player gave their
all and on the night Billy Barrett, Niall Murphy; Pa Hannigan,
Domnic Blake, James Feehan, Adam 0 Connell and Robbie Blake were
best.
Our thanks to the mentors who looked after the lads for the year.
We took part in a blitz in Kilmacud Crokes last Saturday and we
will have a report next week.
U16: We are still awaiting refixtures for our remaining
matches.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK This weeks award goes to Robbie Blake for his
effort for our u14's last week.
BOTHAR NA SMAOINTHE This
week we recall a famous juvenile success that had a big influence
on our hurling future. In 1987 we qualified for the South senior
final but alas on the day we didn't perform and we were down and
out.
But the next night our U14 hurlers were playing Toomevara in the
county final. It was a star studded Toomevara team and few gave
us a chance, but what a display we got from our boys. In a riproaring
match we led most of the way but Toome took the lead in the final
stages with a goal. Normally this would be game up but this team
were made of sterner stuff.
With time just up and two points down Larry Hayes (RIP) carried
the ball to the 21 and handpassed to Anthony Nolan who soloed
through and handpassed to the net to send the Killenaule supporters
wild.
There was still time for Toome to recover but our backs superbly
led by the outstanding Eugene Purcell held out for a famous victory
on the scoreline of 5-7 to 2-15.
Many of this team went on to feature in many a success in the
following years. We had many great displays on the night but one
man stood head and shoulders above everyone else and he was Ton,
Shelly. At the time he was probably tht best of that age group
in the country am he gave an exhibition of striking and scoring.
Other stars on the night wen Paul Shelly, Eamon Bulfin, Liam Butler,
the two John Healy's, Anthony Nolan, Larry Hayes, Kenny Lawerence,
Kevin Shelly, Adrian Cleary and our two goal hero Steve Lawlor.
BLAST FROM THE PAST This
week's award goes to a man who is just home from England for the
All-Ireland final. Pa Cooke was a top class minor and graduated
on to the senior team for our bid for three-in-a row in 1955.
He was a very versatile player who could play in the backs, in
midfield or in the fowards. In the final against Marl- field he
outshone no less a player than Theo English. Lining out at right
hal- foward he set up scores for the rest of the foward line.
Pa was also a noted athlete , and featured in the many successes
of Killenaule AC and Coolquill AC. He was to win an All-Ireland
gold cross country medal with Tipperary but the race he remembers
best was a 27 mile road race .
In the 50's which he ran in his bare feet. He didn't win the race
but he'll never forget it as he couldn't walk for a month. Pa
is a regular visitor to Killenaule and is looking foward to the
day when we finally bring home the Dan Breen. He said if Tipperary
won the All-Ireland he would- n't go back for a month.
Pa becomes the third meinber of his family to receive this award.
Take a bow Pa.
ALL-STARS Nomination papers
for our All-Star teams of the last 25 years are now available.
Remember for €5 you can nominate your hurling and football
teams.
This week's question: Name
the last Killenaule to play senior championship hurling with Tipperary
before he played senior championship hurling with Killenaule?
KILLENAULE GAA Our minor
hurlers defeated rivals Ballingarry last Thursday evening by 4-
~ 12 to 0-13.
The game took place in Mullinahone. The team are unbeaten all
year in the South championship and are on course for a first South
minor-hurling championship title since2002.
Hard luck to the club's Junior B footballers who were knocked
out of the championship by Moyle Rovers. The team fought hard
and put in an outstanding performance and were just unlucky to
come out the wrong side of the result. The final score was 2-09
to 0-12 in favour of the Powerstown/Lisronagh club.
We had two representatives in Croke Park last Sunday in the All-Ireland
senior hurling final against Kilkenny. Unfortunately we are all
very disappointed to come away without the Liam McCarthy Cup but
the team still deserves a lot of praise for what was a heroic
performance. We would like to say well done to both Declan Fanning
and Pat "Festie" Kerwick who were on the field of play and did
both their club and their county very proud.
We hope to see you both in the blue and gold colours next year
and hopefully you can yet get that All Ireland medal that you
both deserve. Our senior hurling team, take on the field this
Sunday in, Cashel to play Golden/Kilfeacle for a place in the
county quarter-final,
We would like to wish them the very best of luck as we hope they
can bounce back from the South final defeat to rivals Mullinahone.
