BLAST FROM THE PAST This
week's blast had an extremely long career that stretched over
two and a half decades. Michael Bulfin was play-anywhere player
who played in a variety ofpositions for Killenaule. He won a South
hurling title in the 60's and was instantly promoted to the senior
team. During the early years he was to play wing-forward and corner-
forward just as his father Philip (RIP) had done in previous years.
He was blessed with great pace and also possesed a terrific first
touch. He was to feature in our many intermediate and junior triumphs
of the late 60's and right through the 70's. He continued right
through the 80's before he went into semi-retirement.
He returned in 1987 to play a key role in our march to the South
final but unfortunately there was to be no fairytale ending as
we failed to lift the cup. Michael was to prove a regular goalgetter
and one of his great traits was his ability to flick the ball
first time to the net. Michael also gave a spell in defence and
featured regularly at both corner and full-back. He captained
our intermediate hurlers from full-back in 1976. He was also an
accomplished footballer and he also proved to be quite a nippy
soccer player.
Michael also served on our committee for many years and served
as secretary in the 90's. Michael still retains a great interest
in our club and of course his daughters were to follow in their
fathers footsteps as they became topclass camogie players. Michael
was one of the real gentlemen of Killenaule hurling. Take a bow'
Michael.
QUIZTIME The answer to last
week's question was John (,Bubbles') Q'Dwyer who scored the first
point for our minors in the county football final.
This week's question is: Name the last Killenaule man to score
a goal in a county senior hurling final.
Week 18-10-09
Travelling People - childrens
school. With the success of last years endeavour the programme
has commenced again this year with 10 children attending with
their tutors. It is hoped that the classes will help the children
to read and write and so help them to integrate in life in later
years.
Killenaule Playground Committee
The committee will hold a meeting in Ardagh House at 9 pm on Monday
19th October ..... new members welcome ... Work is now underway
on the construction of the playground and court area. As fund
raising continues the committee urges all members of the community
to continue to support this great development for the local area.
I.C.A. At the October meeting
held in St. Mary's Hall, members were very interested in talk
by Fairtrade volunteer Catherine Corcoran who spoke on Fairtrade
products available in shops and how we the consumer through purchasing
same make a significant difference in the developingworld and
directly support the five million farmers workers and their families
in 54 countries that benefit from Fairtrade and showing you care
about the likes of people in India, Africa, Central and SouthAmerica
that grow the teal coffee, bananas and other products we consume
on a daily basis. Centra Supermarket in Killenaule have Fairtrade
products on the shelves. Change todayand choose Fairtrade!.
Sympathy was passed at this
meeting to Mary Sirr (member) on the recent death of her mother
and to the Joy and Mackey families on their bereavements.

O'Donnell Concert in 02 this weekend and two members attended
IC.A. Conference in Gorey last weekend.
MOYGLASS SOCCER CLUB Moyglass
United school boys under 8's 'and under lO's played their first
match of the season last weekend away to Rosegreen.
Our under 8's played extremely well and showed some great passing
movement from Conor Kirwan, Len Purcell, Sean Walsh, Daire O'Connell,
Matthew Gleeson and Sarah Delaney. They came away with a deserved
win, with gocils from Dylan Lee, Aaron Ryan, Mark McCormack, Evan
Loobey; Ciaran O'Dwyer and Man of the match performance from Jamie
Lee, Credit must be given to Ciaran O'Loughlin and Mark Stakelum
who pulled off some heroic saves to keep Moyglass in the game.
Our under 10's played a very competitive game against a good strong
spirited Rosegreen team. The teams were evenly matched and at
half time the Iscore was nil all. Moyglass up their game in the
second half and with goals from Mark Heffernan and Harry Cummins
gave Moyglass a two goals to nil victory. Many thanks to Rosegreen
for a great performance.

KILLENAULE GAA Last weekend
proved to be a historic one for Killenaule GM Club. The minor
football team brought back the first ever county minor title to
the club on Saturday afternoon with a well deserved win over Bor-
risolleigh in Boherlahan. After the disappointment of losing out
in the hurling championship, this team kept their heads up and
showed true heart and determination to bring this county B football
title back to Killenaule for the very first time.
Killenaule looked unstoppable in the first half as they got the
first score of the game in the third minute with a superb kick
from John 0' Dwyer's left foot to put them into the lead. Tomas
Nolan was working very hard at midfield and kicked over three
points in the opening half. The goals came from corner forward
Gregory Henry who didn't seem to know how to miss as he kicked
two absolute stunners to the net in the 16th and 28th minutes
of the first half. Jack O'Connell was also showing and using his
strength at wing forward with some fine scores of his own. Killenaule
went in at half time 2- 9 to 0-5 ahead.
The second half began just like first for the young robins as
they managed to create and take scores in the opening minutes.
Substitute ·Daniel Guinan got his name on the scoresheet with
a well taken point in the 16th minute of the second half. Killenaule
continued to keep kicking over scores to prevent Borrisolleigh
getting back into the game. They were unlucky to have conceded
two goals on injury time but still came out deserving winners
by 2-18 to 2-6.
These young set of players will go down in history as the first
ever minor team to bring ack a county title. Also well done to
Niall 0' wyer, Tommy Fitzgerald and essie Taylor for their fine
effort training the team this year. Welldone to everybody as ye
have done the club proud.
The Killenaule team lined out as follows: Robert Hall, Alan Bourke,
Stephen Hannigan, Aidan Leahy, Joseph Meagher; Conor Prendergast
(Capt), James Shaw, Tomas Nolan (0-5 2f), Cathal Bergin (0-1),
JJ Webster, John "Bubbles' O'Dwyer (0- 4 2f), Jack O'Connell (0-3),
Gregory Henry (2-1), Joe 'Mouse' O'Dwyer (0-1), Conor Van Dickenberg
(0-1). . Subs: Daniel Guinan (0-1) for JJ Webster, Shane Kavanagh
for Aidan Leahy, Thomas Keaveney for Joe O'Dwyer, Ethan Cronin
for James Shaw, Jamie O'Connor for Conor Van Dickenberg.
Our senior footballers also made a bit of history last Sunday
afternoon as they took to the field of legends known as Semple
Stadium for the first time ever in a county semi final. They were
up against Moyle Rovers who unfortunately were too strong on the
day. They ran out winners by 2-12 to 0-2 but Killenaule can be
very proud of their avhievements this year in the senior football
championship as they knocked out last year's champions Galtee
Rovers and made it to a county semi final which gave them- the
chance to play in Semple Stadium. Well done everybody!
KILLENAULE JUVENILE GAA CLUB
UI0: With our playing season coming to an end it is
exspected that our UI0's will play their championship this weekend.
Players will be notified.
UI6's: Our hurlers who were disqualified from the champi-
onship had their case heard last Thursday and it was found that
we were wrongly eliminated and so we are awaiting the process
for the replaying of out fixtures by South Tipperary BordnanOg.
HISTORY MAKERS Over the past
number of weeks we have been recalling occasions which have had
a major influence on our club. Well last Saturday in Boherlahan
will in future years be remembered as one such moment. When the
referee blew I the whistle at the end of the County Minor Football
Final, Killenaule had won their first ever county minor title.
Although Killenaule was always known as a hurling club, the past
number of years have proved very successful with the big ball.
Down the years we have found county titles hard to come by, but
last Saturday's team members each have two county medals and indeed
the majority have three medals. So although we didn't reach the
heights we expected with our senior teams the future is certainly
far from bleak and if these players are looked after in the coming
years there is no doubt the harvest in future years will yield
a big crop. Well done everyone.
CALENDAR Our 2010 calendar has gone to prinf and the finished
product should be available in early November. The orders are
piling in so get your order in now to avoid disappointment.
AGM Our annual general meeting takes place on Friday 30th
October at 8.30 in St. Mary's Hall. Anyone who is interested in
the promotion of our national games are asked to attend. We especially
invite all the parents to come along and get involved. Our calendar
will be launched prior to the meeting and light refreshments will
be served.
ALL STARS The all Star nomination papers are flooding
back and there are a wide varity of players being nominated. So
get your team returned and remember you are the selectors and
it is your choice who the Killenaule All Stars of the past 25
years will be.
BLAST FROM THE PAST This week's blast from the past becomes
the first player from Moyglass to be honoured. Although he wasn't
your modern day skillful, flicking hurler, he had other qualities
which more than compensated. Matty Tynan came from a family which
was steeped in the GAA tradition and indeed many a Killenaule
hurler used a hurley which was handmade by Mattie's father. Matty
was unmistakable on the field with his locks of curly hair protruding
from his familiar black helmet. He-was-a-no-nonsense-first-time
hurler who revelled in the close exchanges and when he played
in the half forwards he could deliver a quick low ball to his
full line with a first time pull. He won Junior and Intermediate
titles in the seventies and never gave less than 100% in any match.
Matty of course was also one of the great supporters of the football
club and in an era when it wasn't popular to play football. Matty
always made sure he was available for the footballers and was
of course one of our finest footballers of that era. But for the
like of Matty it's doubtful if the game would have survived to
this day: So Matty and the people who helped to promote the football
back then can take a bit of credit for our recent success at the
big ball code.
Matty was also a founder member of the Moyglass Soccer Club and
a very robust player in his day:
Matty has recently accuired owernership of the local pub in Moyglass,
which he runs with the help of his family; and we take this opportunity
to wish them the best of luck and we hope to call to him with
a few cups in the coming years. Matty was also a successful horse
trainer and to sum him up he was and is a real sportsman.
Take a bow Matty:
QUIZTIME . The answer to
last week's question was Paul Shelly; who won a Junior title with
Fennellys, a South senior with Killenaule, captained Tipperary
in a Munster U21 final and also captained Tipperary to win an
Oireachtas title.
This week's question is: Who scored the first point for
Killenaule in the recent county minor football final?

BLAST FROM THE PAST - J.P.
SHAW This week's blast is still as fit and as fresh looking
as he was in his playing days. He played in goal for the Tipperary
football minor team in 1977 and went on to have quite a successful
caeerr in both hurling and football for Killenaule for the next
couple of decades. J. P. Shaw was on the senior team that made
the breakthrough in 1987 when we won our first senior trophy winning
the South senior league beating St. Mary's in the final. He scored
a point from wing back which was to prove vital in a low scoring
match. J.P. had shared in l our many intermediate wins in the
preceding years and was both unlucky and very disappointed not
to nail down a permanent position. He was well built and possessed
a great burst of speed and was the player who introduced "nuclear"
hurling to Killenaule. Although known as a nuclear hurler he also
possessed the age old skills of bygone years "chopping" and "swiping".
J P was also very successful in other sports 'and 'was a regular
visitor to the winner's enclosure when he was head jockey at that
well known racing establishment Spencers. J P is also a great
sup- porter of the greyhound industry and has been successful
both on the track and in the coursing fields. He also represented
our club in scar and was a member of the last group to win a set
dancing competition. At present he is the top advisor to that
great horse trainer Aidan O'Brien. J P is also a very adept match
commentator and match analyst and is looking forward to playing
this role when our minor footballers play the county final this
weekend. An out and out sportsman no matter what the sport, Take
a bow J P .
QUIZTIME The answer to last
weeks question was Tom Ryan who played with Galway before he returned
to play with Killenaule in 1977. This week's question is: He won
a county junior A medal. He won a South senior medal with Killenaule
and he also captained Tipperary in a Munster final and also captained
Tipperary when they won an Oireacthas flnal, Who is he?
