history when we will honour our best players of the last 25years.
BEST OF LUCK To a former Blast of the Past, Tom Shelly
who has declared his intention to run for club chairman in the
upcoming senior AGM. Tom has given terrific service to the club
in many capacities and it would fulfil a life- time ambition to
become chairman.
BLAST FROM THE PAST This week's "Blast" had a relatively
short career considering the enormous potential he displayed as
a juvenile. As a youngster Philip Butler was the brightest prospect.
in our club. He was almost unbeatable under the dropping ball
and it was very common to see him emerge from a ruck of players
with the sliothar safely tucked away in his "paw". As a juvenile
he won an under 15 South hurling medal and as a Minor he fea-
tured on our Intermediate team. It was surely one of the great
injustice's that he wasn't selected on the county minor hurling
team because at the time he was one of the best around. Work commitments
was to take him away from Killenaule for a few years but he returned
to share in our U21 successes of the late seventies. Although
he had lost a bit of pace he still possessed great aerial ability.
He quickly regained his place on the intermediate team and he
scored the vital goal when we defeated Cahir in a very low scoring
South (mal in 1978. He soldiered on for a few more years in the
lower ranks before he transferred his allegiance to Marlifield
where he now lives. He gave great service to his new club up to
his retirement. Philip Was also a talented footballer who had
played minor and U21 football with Ballingarry and starred with
them for many years. In recent years Philip has gone in to the
pub business and he runs the very successful Butler's Sports Bar
in Fethard. It has become a favourite watering hole for us whether
we are celebrating or drowning our sorrows after matches. Take
a bow Philip.
ADJOURNED CONVENTION Our adjourned convention takes place
on Thursday 26th November in St. Mary's Hall. This is a very impor-
tant meeting as we hope to put in place team managers and selectors
for the coming year. Anyone interested in helping out feel free
to attend.
QUIZTIME The answer to last
week's question was Tom Shanahan and Ned Croke who were the first
Killenaule players to win All Ireland senior medals.
This week's question is; In what year did Killenaule
win two county hurling titles in Semple Stadium and who were the
captains.

KILLENAULE GAA
CLUB U10 - It looks like the Ul0 blitz will not now take place.
The players had looked forward to this all year but it seems the
inclement weather has spoiled the party. Whoever came up with
the idea of playing Ul0 hurling in October and November must surely
be out of touch with the Irish weather. Maybe next year these
games will be played during the summer.
UI6 - After three months of waiting it seems like our U16
hurlers will finally get their chance to complete their
championship. It is a credit to our club officers who have fought
tooth and nail for fair play for these lads. We have no idea when
these games will be refixed for but we look forward to completing
our programme of games. We can only guess that the South and County'
championships are to be declared null and void.
Players will be notified of arrangements.
CALENDARS There are still some calendars available and
can be purchased for €10.
ALL STARS There has been a change of date for our All Star
banquet which will now take place on Saturday 6th February in
the Park Hotel Clonmel. The tickets will be available well in
advance so that people can have them purchased before Christmas
or as Christmas presents. Nominations will be accepted right up
to Christmas and nomination forms are available from Joe or Bob.
Remember you have a chance to determine who the best footballers
and hurlers were over the last 25 years. Since 1984 Killenaule
have won 40 South titles and 14 county titles and players from
this club have brought home numerous All Ireland and Munster medals
to the parish. In the past 25 years we have also collected 2 hurling
All Stars. So its going to be no cakewalk getting a place on this
team.
BLAST FROM THE PAST This
week's "Blast" is not eligible for our All Stars but if he was
he would have been a certainty. Back in the late 50's a young
man from Graystown burst on the scene and was to take the hurling
world by storm in the following years.
Tom Ryan was unmistakable with his fair hair and he possessed
the hardest shot in the country. He won a Minor All Ireland in
1959 and very quickly progressed to the senior ranks and he was
one of the stars of Tipp's wins in 1961/62. He also had the distinction
of scoring one the best goals ever scored in Croke Park when he
doubled on a ball forty yards out and the first anyone knew of
it was when the umpire raised the green flag. He was also to the
fore when Killenaule won South senior titles in the early 60's.
Tom was the star of South Tipperary hurling at the time and very
few players got the better of him. Tom toured with the Tipperary
team to New York in the 60's and was to prove a big hit there.
Tom was to create headlines in the mid 60's when he transferred
away from Killenaule and Tipperary and resumed his hurling career
in Clare. With Clare he featured in many great battles against
his native County but alas as good as he was he couldn't carry
them on his own. After his stint with Clare he transferred to
Galway with whom he starred for a few more years. Tom was almost
forgotten about until 1977 when he returned to play with Killenaule
and although he was now in his veteran years he certainly created
a I great buzz in the parish. Alas the years had taken their toll
and Tom couldn't perform miracles so at the end of that year he
retired.
He still retains great interest in the game and he had the honour
of leading our club in the parade to mark the 100th anniversary
of the South Board. He still looks like he could handle a hurley.
A man who will always be spoken about when hurling in Killenaule
is being discussed, Take A Bow Tom!.
QUIZTIME The answer to last
week's question was Bob Hall. Who was the first Killenaule man
to become chairman of the South Board. Ironically Bob was also
a selector on the Tipperary minor team in 1959 and Bob was also
the headmaster in Graystown School when a young boy by the name
of Tom Ryan attended.
This week's question is: Who was the first Killenaule man
to win an All Ire- land Senior Medal.

Calendar Our sales are going great and it is excepted
that it will be a 100% sellout.
All Stars Looking at some of the returned team sheets
it seems that there may be a lot of surprises when our All Stars
will be announced, on January 30 in the Park Hotel, Clonmel. A
nomination paper can be had from any committee member, and remember
that the closing date is the second week of December.
Blast From The Past . This week's blast always stood.
out from everybody else because not only was he one of our best
prospects as a juvenile but he was also one of the tallest. Sean
Ryan was one of our best juveniles in the 80's but he had to wait
until 1987 to really make his mark. When Killenaule played Fethard
in a first round U21 hurling game they suffered one of their heaviest
defeats in this grade and how they managed to progress to the
final that year still remains a mystery. We entered that game
as massive underdogs but the selectors pulled a master stroke
when they moved Sean from his normal centrefield berth to wing
back. His performance in the no.7 jersey was one of the main reasons
why Killenaule turned around a 17 point loss in the previous game
between between the teams to a 1 point win. Sean dominated the
game with his high fielding, great covering and long striking.
His performance being the big difference in a low scoring game.
Although beaten by Moneygal in the county championship, Sean had
announced his arrival on the big stage. That same year he, also
featured in what was nearly the comeback of the century when he
played a starring role for our U21 footballers who recovered from
a 0-7 to 0-0 half time score line to be just edged out by 1 point
by Ardfinnan in the south final. Sean went on to star for our
seniors for a decade or so collecting many honours along the way.
He got to collect that elusive county medal in 1994 when our Junior
footballers lifted the cup. Sean's commitment to training was
second to none as he commuted to and from Waterford for training
twice and sometimes three times a week. He was also an accomplished
soccer player who plied his trade with the local Rovers soccer
team.
It is thought by many that Sean retired somewhat prematurely and
maybe had a few more years left at the top. He will surely feature
prominently in our upcoming All Star teams. Take a bow Sean.
Quiztime The answer to last
weeks question was Davy Lawarence, who captained Killenaule to
their first football county title in 1994.
This weeks question is: Who was the first KilIenaule-man to become
chairman of the South Board.

KILLENAULE GAA CLUB
UI0 - Unfortunately our games last Saturday were postponed
at the last minute. We would like to apologise to the players
and their parents for any inconvienence caused. We can assure
you the blame does not lie with our club as we didn't get notice
until 9.30 on Friday night. Players will be notified of the refixture.
CALENDAR Well it's here at last, our 2010 calendar was
launched last Friday night prior to our AGM by
Tipperary hurling star Declan Fanning. It' is a beautiful production
will prove a lovely addition to any home.
It features all the juveniles who have featured for our club this
year as well as many teams from the past. We only had 600 calendars
printed and with about 1000 houses in the parish some people are
going to be disappointed. So get your copy now. Remember it would
make a beautiful present for Christmas.
AGM Our annual convention took place last weekend and was
attended by quite a large number. Our secretary delivered an impressive
report which was very complimentary towards the many people who
helped out in the running of our club this year and it was equally
critical of the treatment of our club by South Bord na nag. The
meeting was attended by the officers of our senior club who cornlemented
our juvenile club on heir efforts during the year. The hairman
Joe O'Dwyer in his ddress paid tribute to the various earn mentors
and also mentioned the historic appearence of the U12 earn in
Croke Park and hoped that any of those same players might one
day return there as seniors on some St. Patrick's Day in the future.
There was only one change at the top table where Pat Fennelly
takes over from Christine Butler as treaurer. The selection of
team mentors for the coming year was deferred until he next committee
meeting and it is hoped that we can encourage players and past
players to get involved.
ALL-STARS- With our playing
season over our attention turns to the selection of our All-Star
team of the last 25 years. During the coming weeks' nomination
papers will be distributed along with lists of players, but you
wish to nominate someone who doesn't appear on the list feel free
to do so. The players who receive the most nominations will become
the All-Stars. The presentation of the awards will take place
on Saturday, 30th January and the venue will be Clonmel Park Hotel.
It will be a black tie affair for the men and I'm sure the ladies
will dazzle us with their style. The tickets will be available
for Christmas and would make an ideal present. Nomination papers
can be had from any committee member and don't forget you are
the selectors and it's your vote that counts.
BLAST FROM THE PAST This
week's "Blast" comes from that great sporting village Ballynonty
and also comes from a great sporting family. Derek Healy becomes
the youngest player to date to recieve this award, but although
young in years he is a most deserving winner. Being the son of
Sean Healy, Derek had no other choice but to get involved in sport.
In hi:s younger years he was' a very promising athlete and indeed
had he concentrated on running who knows but he might have been
the first Ballynonty man to compete in the Olympics. But from
12 years on he concentrated on Gaelic games and was equally efficient
at both Hurling and Football. At a time when juvenile success
were rare he was a member of our U14 team that' won a South title.
He played three years for our minors before graduating onto our
U21 team who won a South title in 1987 and were very unlucky to
be beaten in the county fmal by Moneygall. Derek went on to represent
the club at junior and senior level before he finally picked up
that elusive county medal when he played a leading role as Killenaule
picked up their first county football title beating Borrisleigh
in the fmal. One of the proudest men in Cashel that day was Derek's
father Sean who almost singlehandedly kept football alive in our
club. Even in the vetearn stages Derek still made himself available
and soldiered on for many years with our junior and junior B teams.
Although no longer living in the parish he still takes a great
interest in all our club teams and still attends many of our matches.
Derek of course is a great supporter of our County teams and is
nearly a fixture in Dr. Morris Park and Semple Stadium on training
nights. It's even being rumoured that Derek is the chief advisor
to Liam Sheedy and played a big part in Tipp's run to the All
Ireland last I year. A worthy recipient of our Blast From The
Past Award, Take a bow Derek.
QUlZTIME The answer
to last week's question was, Killenaule won six South intermediate
titles, five hurling in 1974, 78, 83, 85, 86 and one football
title in 2004.
This week's question is: Who captained Killenaule to their
first football county title win?
