Killenaule take under-16 'B' title in style

Killenaule 4-8; St. Patricks 1-7

  • Killenaule captured the South under-16 B Football Championship with an impressive display, proving too strong for St. Patrick's at Fethard on Saturday evening last. While the game was an entertaining one with a high standard of football, the Killenaule boys seemed to have a little more craft and hunger particularly in the second half and held off the best efforts of the St. Patrick's side.

    It had all started so brightly for St. Patrick's and straight from the throw in, play moved forward to Danny Gleeson who had the first score of the game, a point in the 2nd minute to give his side a dream start. Michael Doyle opened Killenaule's account with a point from play in the 6th minute.

    The next four minutes belonged to St. Patrick's and midfielder Robbie Ryan put over fine points in the 6th minute and in the 10th minutes. Brian Hickey gathered a good pass from Damien McCormack before clinically finishing to the Killenaule net.

    In the 11th minute, Dean Madden put over a fine point from play. The game swung back in the favour of the Killenaule side when Brian Murphy tapped in a goal in the 12th minute. Stephen Browne added another point in the 22nd minute. Centre forward Padraig Kirby had a fine point in the 25th minute.

    St. Patrick's full forward Damien McCormack was fouled and the same player took the free and put it over the bar in the 28th minute. Killenaule's Stephen Browne, playing well at wing forward, had a point in the 30th minute leaving the half time score, Killenaule 1-4 St. Patrick's 1-4.

    St. Patrick's opened the scoring in the second half, a point from Damien McCormack in the 3rd minute, also Robbie Ryan added another in the 4th minute. Killenaule's wing back Paddy Codd opened the scoring with a point in the 5th minute.

    Stephen Brownes good work ended with a goal in the 6th minute. Corner forward John Kelly shot a fine goal in the 10th minute after collecting a great pass from Stephen Browne, Padraig Kirby added another point in the 11th minute and the same player raced up field and slotted the ball past St. Patrick's keeper Richard Needham for a great goal in the 14th minute.

    Brian Murphy playing very well at corner forward added another point in the 15th minute and it was all Killenaule at this stage. St. Patrick's centre back Tom McGrath raced up field and put over a fine point in the 20th minute, the last score for St. Patrick's. Killenaule's Michael Doyle had the last score of the game, a point in the 23rd minute. Killenaule now go forward to the County Semi Final.
