Killenaule Beat South Champions At Clonmel
Killenaule beat South Champions at Clonmel
(From “The Clonmel Nationalist” 12-12-1931)
Killenaule, on Sunday, surmounted what they no doubt regarded as one of the principle obstacles on the road to the South Senior Hurling Championship when they disposed of Boherlahan, unbeaten South Division Champions for a number of years. The Boherlahan team showed almost a complete transformation from the combination of by-gone years, which always ousted Killenaule when the latter team marched victorious to the South Division Final. Some strange faces were also noticeable on the Killenaule side, and in both cases the new blood gave a good account of itself, although on the Boherlahan team the impetuosity of new comers cost them a few scores. The game was a fast, strenuous encounter, and the close, fearless tackling which characterized it somewhat lowered the general standard of play. Nevertheless, some individual feats were witnessed on both sides, which might be described as brilliant.
Killenaule were first to penetrate when after about twenty minutes, T. Shanahan opened the scoring for Killenaule. They held a lead of a goal and a point at half-time and in the second moiety, though hard pressed at times by the Boherlahan forwards, they maintained a winning margin, scoring two further majors and only conceding a goal and a point. The winners, though fully deserving their success, are flattered by the final score of 3 goals and 2 points to 1 goal and 2 points, as Boherlahan were undoubtedly unlucky on several occasions. Noticeable absentees from the losing side were Johnny Leahy, Paddy Leahy, and Arthur O’Donnell, the veteran All-Ireland players. Guard Bob McGann refereed the match in a masterly fashion. Half-time score; Killenaule 1-2; Boherlahan 0-1. Final score: Boherlahan 1-3; Killenaule 3-2.
