Presentation Secondary School Ballingarry
Spring Has Sprung
In Gerard Manley Hopkins poem “Spring” he says “Nothing is so beautiful as spring- When weeds in wheels grow long and lovely and lush.” On Tuesday morning last one would have been forgiven for thinking we were in the midst of November when we awoke to find ourselves wrapped in a blanket of snow. Travelling to Ballingarry on such a morning awoke our sense of wonder and awe as we took in its wonderful and picturesque landscape. Despite the trepidation which undoubtedly was felt by many drivers this picture postcard scene certainly uplifted the heart.

Lent 2013
We are delighted once again to support the work of Trocaire as an essential part of our Lenten preparation for Easter. On a recent visit to our school Claire O’ Carroll, Trocaire’s Education officer thanked the school for its involvement in fundraising for Trocaire which has resulted in the accumulation of twenty six thousand Euros over the past ten years. This year the campaign focuses on India and once again while our students will fundraise through participating in The Trocaire “Give it up” campaign we will also strive to raise awareness around issues of inequality and injustice.
In India Trocaire works in the state of Odisha with local partner organisations to organise, educate and empower poor rural communities. This partnership reflects the partnership that exists between PresentationSecondary School, Ballingarry and St. Anthony’s Secondary School, Chennai which is run by the Presentation Sisters. Ours is an on-going partnership and this year the school has begun fundraising to sponsor the education of one of the poor children from the impoverished slum areas of Chennai. Students had an opportunity to contribute to this fund by contributing to a no uniform day.
1st And 2nd Year Lincoln Project
On Wednesday 5th our first and second years had the wonderful opportunity of learning about Lincoln outside of the classroom as they were treated to a morning at the cinema. In preparation students prepared a number of presentations on “Slavery in America,” “The Great Quotations of Abraham Lincoln” and “The American Civil War.” Tipped for Oscar glory, Daniel Day-Lewis stared as Abraham Lincoln in this Steven Spielberg epic about the legendary American President’s battle to abolish slavery. A great day was had by all and the students enjoyed this novel and very educational learning experience.Students are now busy compiling their reviews of the Film.
Transition Year Girls Spikeball Leaders Programme. A Women in Sport initiative supported by the Irish Sports Council

Under the guidance of Mary Lawlor students enjoyed an intensive training session and are now excitedly looking forward to heading to our local primary schools to begin their coaching experience.

Our u-17,u-15 and first year hurlers gathered in huge numbers on the Astro-Turf in Tipperary town during the week in preparation for our upcoming games after the midterm break. Our u-17 hurlers face Doon CBS on Wednesday Feb 27th and our u-17 hurlers play Rockwell Community College on Wednesday Feb 20th. Good luck to all.
Basketball: First Year Girls Claim Victory
First year girls had a fantastic win on Wednesday last in Monroe when they overcame a strong team from Cahir. This was a hard fought nail biting game which saw both team competing for the win until the girls from Presentation Ballingarry pulled away to secure the win. This was the girls final game in the league and it was wonderful to finish on a winning note. Well done to all involved.
St Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day (Saint Valentine’s Day) is an occasion celebrated on February 14. It is the traditional day on which people express their love for each other by sending Valentine cards, presenting flowers, or offering confectionery. Students enjoyed an opportunity to do some research on St. Valentine in class. Here are some of their findings.
Did you know that according to the Catholic Encyclopaedia, at least three Saint Valentines are mentioned who are associated with 14 February. One is described as a priest at Rome, another as a Bishop of Interamna (now Terni in Italy) and the other lived and died in Africa. The Valentine that most experts believe is the actual one remembered on St. Valentine’s Day was a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity.
Valentine’s Day Superstitions & Traditions
Traditionally, spring begins on St Valentine’s Day (February 14th), the day on which birds chose their mates. There are many other traditions and superstitions associated with romantic activities on Valentine’s day including:
the first man an unmarried woman saw on 14th February would be her future husband;
if the names of all a girl’s suitors were written on paper and wrapped in clay and the clay put into water, the piece that rose to the surface first would contain the name of her husband-to-be.
if a woman saw a robin flying overhead on Valentine’s Day, it meant she would marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a rich person.
In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week.
In Wales wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on February 14th. Hearts, keys and keyholes were favourite decorations on the spoons. The decoration meant, “You unlock my heart!”
Card Making
First year students are taking part in a competition to make a Valentine card as Gaeilge and are busy composing some lovely poems in their native tongue. To reward their hard work Bean Ui Laocha is giving them an early Easter treat with an Easter Egg as the prize for the top two cards.
Happy Valentine ’s Day!
