Italian Trip 2013
Leaving behind the chilling winds which has kept temperatures well below average for this time of year a group of 5th and TY students together with tour organiser Mr. Joe Moran and his three colleagues, Mr.O’ Leary, Ms. O’ Dwyer and Ms. Coleman took to the early morning skies for a packed and highly educational tour of some of Italy’s most popular sights. Students got to enjoy the highlights of Florence. Known as the jewel of Renaissance Italy, Florence is brimming with rich history, world-renowned art, quaint streets and gorgeous scenery. The highlight of this visit was viewing Michelangelo’s “David,” the marble sculpture of a naked man recognized as a prestigious masterpiece of Renaissance art.
Then it was onto Rome and what better time to visit this “Eternal City” than just after Pope Francis’s election. It was with great interest that students visited the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s Basilica.
No tour of Rome would be complete without a visit to the Colosseum. Once known as the Flavian Ampitheatre, the Rome Colosseum was easily the largest building of the Roman Empire, built to host the gladiator battles that typified the culture of Ancient Rome. Still by far the most impressive building in Rome today and a highlight of the tour for many of our students.
Then it was onto Pompeii where a tour into Rome’s ancient history began high above the city and Bay of Naples, on the crater of Mt. Vesuvius. Europe’s only active volcano, Vesuvius is infamous for causing the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79AD and has erupted many times since – today it’s regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world.
The final leg of the journey was a trip to Montecassino Abbey. On the mountain overlooking the city stands theis Abbey of Montecassino which symbolizes the endurance and resilience of the Christian faith. It was founded in 529 AD by St. Benedict of Nursia and during the Middle Ages became an important centre for the diffusion of Monachism in Europe. This abbey has been destroyed and rebuilt on four separate occasions, the most recent was in 1944 at the end of W.W.II. Today the rebuilt abbey looks exactly as before the war. Reconstruction and decoration works took more than a decade and were exclusively financed by the Italian State. The church crypt hosts the mortal remains of St. Benedict and his twin sister Santa Scolastica. This was a most impressive and reflective ending to what were six tiring yet very enjoyable days.
Spikeball
Eleven Spikeball leaders were trained as part of the Transition Year training programme and leaders have been engaged in training primary schools over the past six weeks. Following on from this there will be a blitz in Mullinahone Training Centre on “3rd of April. We are looking forward to this day and hope that all the local primary school children who are involved will not only show off their newly acquired skills but have great fun on the day.
Athletic Success
Congratulations to Leanne and Darren Prout on their continued success. Their recent achievements include a first for Darren in the 100m sprint and long jump in Kilmacow open competition while Leanne took 1st in the 100 m sprint.
In Templemore open competition Darren came 1st in the hurdles, 10m sprint and long jump. Leanne came second in the hurdles and relay. Well done to Leanne who competed in the All Ireland Relay Competition and came 2nd in u16 and 3rd in u17. What can we say except that their dedication to their training is an inspiration to us all and they deserve every success.
