School News Presentation Secondary School  Ballingarry
Cancer Survivor Liam Inspires Senior Students.
Once in a while there comes along that very special speaker who stops us in our track and makes us count our blessings and on Thursday 18th April that is exactly what happened when cancer survivor Liam Ryan spoke to our senior students and their teachers.
They say that life begins at 40 but Liam Ryan could not have anticipated the changes that he would experience in his life on reaching that milestone. Perfectly healthy on his fortieth birthday he was to undertake a journey that would take him through 3 life threatening illnesses in hospitals in three different countries before he reached 41.  It was in the midst of  the trauma that Liam came a new perspective. “I’d watch the news, listen to stories of young men being killed in road accidents and realize I had a lucky break.”
“My health is good now.”  Liam added. “ I am 51 years of age and run 40 miles per week. But seven years ago, I was physically exhausted. I had to rebuild myself, re-learn how to talk, how to walk, how to eat. After the surgery, I could only open my mouth half an inch.
“Psychologically, I had to quickly realise that I had to fight this thing, that self-pity was not an option. I couldn’t be a hard-lucky story – even if I did spend four months in a Liverpool hospital recovering from surgery, even if a holiday in the Canaries ended with me contacting meningitis and spending three weeks fighting for my life in a Spanish hospital.
“My story has to be told – because my story proves that there is a way back, that members of ‘the club’ (cancer victims) can draw power from one another. We can fight back and never look back. We can learn that day one – being told the news is the worst day because that is the day you go from 60 to 0 in seconds. You suffer tough moments. The point is, though, you come through them.”
The Ballina man is now  committed to raising money for the Mid-Western Cancer Foundation. Ultimately, Liam hopes to bring his fundraising campaign beyond the Mid West to make it a national appeal. In the coming years, he also wants to get the Irish diaspora abroad involved, and plans on running marathons in the UK and US towards his goal of raising €3 million for cancer services.
As well as raising money, Liam hopes his campaign will encourage others to take up running and pursue a healthier lifestyle. He is particularly mindful of the issue of childhood obesity in Ireland, and believes schools should promote running as an alternative activity for children unsuited to team sports.

Hurling
We were delighted with our performance in the county hurling first and second year blitz played in Dr Morris Park on Wednesday last. In heavy conditions, many of our young players acquitted themselves very well with Fiachra Scott excelling in the heart of the defence and Mark Mullally notching two wonder goals up front. We look forward to the upcoming Fr. Eanna Cup hurling tournament in the Cistercian College, Roscrea.
South-Tipperary Representation
Best wishes and well done to our students Keith Cleere, Darragh Kelly, Dylan Walsh, Richard Ivors and John Walsh who are playing with the South-Tipperary U-15 hurling team. Congratulations also to Jack Kealy. Patrick Ivors, Jamie Broderick and Barry O’Dwyer who are involved with the u14 south team.
Spikeball
All roads lead to Mullinahone on Tuesday as the Transition Year Girls Leadership in Sport Spikeball programme comes to a conclusion with the inter-primary schools blitz on this Tuesday April 23rd. The girls have enjoyed their coaching experiences in the local primary schools immensely and are looking forward to the blitz day. The girls will be pitting their wits against each other as the students of Lisnamrock NS, Mohober NS, Slieveardagh NS, Ballingarry NS, Drangan NS and Mullinahone NS display their spikeball skills in the same arena. We look forward to an enjoyable and successful day. Our thanks to the local primary school for their continued support.
