“Do One Thing Every Day That Scares You” Advices Sr. Patricia Wall, Guest Speaker At Presentation Ballingarry’s Prize Day.
The April showers that fell intermittently throughout the day on Friday last did nothing to dampen the spirits of all those who gathered for the annual prize giving day in Presentation Secondary School, Ballingarry. In her welcome address Principal, Ms Angela Cahill welcomed the many former staff and sisters of the school who had returned, prize winners and their parents and Guest speaker Sr. Patricia Wall more commonly known as “The Flying Nun!!”
With the construction of the new multi million euro extension almost ready to begin Ms. Cahill launched the “Brick in the Wall Appeal” where one can have an inscription on the wall for time immemorial. There will be a warm welcome awaiting all former students and staff on Saturday May 4th from 2 – 4 pm at the school where all will have an opportunity to view the many photographic displays of times past. This is an ideal opportunity to take a trip down memory lane and meet old friends and new.
In introducing former principal Sr. Patricia Wall as Guest Speaker Ms Cahill spoke of her courage and determination as she prepares for her sky dive on May 6th whilst also highlighting her commitment to the people of Ballingarry and beyond.
Born in Thurles Sr. Patricia’s relationship with the Presentation Sisters began when at 3 ½ she started primary school in Presentation Convent Thurles and at 17 ½ Sr. Patricia became a postulant in Presentation, Thurles. From her address it was easy to see how this woman can even contemplate free falling from a plane all in the name of charity Sr. Patricia’s story is anything but boring and having spent time in New Zealand and Zimbabwe she’s no stranger to adventure. It was during her time in New Zealand that Sr. Patricia said she experienced depression and it is this experience which has inspired her latest venture in aid of AWARE. Having first-hand experience of an illness which seems to be crippling the country Sr. Patricia hopes that by raising awareness and funds for AWARE she will help others who are battling this illness.
Her primary work now sees her immersed in community work – work that has enhanced the lives of so many around the Ballingarry area.
In addressing the students this inspirational woman encouraged the students not to be afraid. She encouraged them to enjoy the power of their youth and beauty and not to worry about the future. In relation to Friendship Sr. Patricia, sister of Tipperary All-Ireland Senior Hurling team Captain of 1958, Tony Wall cautioned against the accumulation of friends on sites such as Facebook and told students that they would be very lucky to have three or four loyal friends. Referring again to personal insights gained from a life enriched by a myriad of experiences Sr. Patricia gave some very practical advice. “If you fail, and you will fail” she added “you must pick yourself up and start again.” To conclude Sr. Patricia gave all gathered a blueprint for a happy successful life summed up in words which encouraged them:

  • to Respect themselves
  • Love themselves
  • Forgive themselves and
  • Show compassion for self and others.

With such a positive, honest and down to earth outlook on life is it no wonder that this woman is now going one step beyond for charity? Her address received a rapturous applause and she certainly left us all with plenty to think about.

Credit Union Student Bursary 2013
Thurles Credit Union has announced the launch of its annual Student Bursary Scheme, and is now inviting applications from all eligible Leaving Certificate students to apply for the significant financial bursaries on offer.
Credit Union President, D. J. Darcy, said that “the Credit Union was very pleased to sponsor the Student Bursary once again” and referred to the excellent response among all the secondary schools in the area to the scheme in 2012. Speaking at the 2013 Launch, Mr. Darcy said “The costs of third-level education have risen considerably in the past few years and we feel that this is an excellent way of easing the burden on hard-pressed parents in these difficult times”. He urged all those students with ambitions to go to third-level college in the next academic year to submit an application.
Marketing Officer, Michael Harty, said “Thurles Credit Union’s bursary is different from most other similar schemes in that is not based on academic achievements but solely on ‘the luck of the draw’ for all the eligible students”. He stated they are offering bursaries with a total value of €3,500 to applicants from within their Common Bond.
The Bursary Scheme is open to all eligible leaving certificate students who intend pursuing a full-time third level course for the first time this year. Applicants must have a Thurles postal address and either the student, or a parent or guardian, must be a member of Thurles Credit Union. Leaving Certificate Students who are not members at present, can join Thurles Credit Union and enter the bursary competition. The closing date for entries is 1st June 2013. The Bursaries will be drawn by lottery among all the qualifying entries under the supervision of a peace commissioner.
Entry forms are currently being distributed to all the secondary schools in the area, and students from Thurles attending schools outside the area can apply to the Credit Union offices in Thurles, Urlingford or Killenaule. For more information see our website, Facebook page, Twitter Account or phone 0504 91700.
