How Many Slaves Work For You?
This was the question posed by The Transition Year students who explored the whole concept of child Labour as part of their “Challenge to Change” module. From a very small beginning ten years ago, the Challenge to Change Project has continued to expand. Each September Presentation Primary and Post-Primary schools are invited to participate in this Development Education Project. Students work, from September to June, on their chosen topic focusing on issues of justice, human rights, sustainability and inter-culturalism. They seek to raise awareness and bring about a greater understanding of their chosen issue. Students are empowered to explore ways in which their local actions can impinge for the better on global issues. This year’s project raised student awareness around some shocking statistics For example students learned how one out of six children in the world today is involved in child labour, doing work that is damaging to his or her mental, physical and emotional development. On Wednesday 23rd May The TY students attended the annual seminar in Kilkenny. Many of those present remarked on how they were challenged to question their own consumer choices when the realised the massive impact such choices can have on the lives of others.
Dublin visit
Our T.Y. class travelled to Dublin on May 7th on with Mr. Moran and Mr.O’Leary. The class had a very enjoyable tour of Glasnevin Cemetery, Collins barracks and Dail Eireann. Our host in the Dail was Deputy Noel Coonan, who very generously gave of his time to allow us access to the corridors of power. The students observed debate in the Dail and Seanad, and met a number of high profile leaders. We are grateful to Deputy Coonan for his courtesy and hospitality in the Dail.
Academic Progress
It has been a very busy week for our Leaving Cert and Junior Cert students as they sat the practical aspect of their Art exams. Art teacher Ms. Norton applauded their preparation. As the state and house examinations approach there is an air of anxious anticipation as students aim to achieve their person best. For our LCA students orals and written exams will commence in less than two weeks. We wish every student the very best of luck and urge them to prepare well while remembering that “Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.” Robert Collier
