Story
As the fiftieth anniversary of his parents wedding approached, Thomas wondered what present he should give them. They had been the best of presents. Eventually he decided to pay for a two week holiday for them in the sun. He was very pleased with himself. But their response took him by surprise. They said, ‘Son, we thank you for your very generous gift. It must have cost you a lot of money. But there is another and better gift you could give us’. ‘What is that?’ he asked earnestly. ‘You wronged your brother Patrick. Go and be reconciled with him. That would have meant more to us than any gift’. Jesus says that if we are on the way to the altar with an offering, and remember that our brother (or sister) has something against us, we should leave our offering there before the altar, go and be reconciled with our brother and then come back and present our offering. Reconciliation is not a holier task than offering a gift at God’s altar. It’s just that lack of reconciliation damages our gift in God’s eyes. The thing that God wants above all is to see his children reconciled.
Reflection
One description of the differences of Heaven and Hell presents a similar picture of both places. In each, there is a large room with very wide tables. People sit at both sides of the tables with extremely long-handled knives and forks to eat their food. This curious cutlery presents practical problems for both sets of residents. But whereas in Hell the inhabitants stare despairingly at the rich food on their tables, realizing that their knives and forks are too awkward to use (and thus face starvation), those in Heaven happily tuck in, circumventing the problem by feeding each other across the wide tables.

Reflection
One day a man visited Mother Theresa’s home for the poor and the dying in Calcutta. He arrived just as the Sisters were bringing in some of the dying off the streets. They had picked up a man out of the gutter. He was covered with dirt and sores. Without knowing that she was being watched, one of the Sisters began to care for the dying man. The visitor kept watching the Sister as she worked. He saw how tenderly she cared for her patient. He noticed how as she washed the man she smiled at him. She did not miss a detail in her attentive care for that dying man. After carefully watching the Sister, the visitor turned to Mother Teresa and said “When I came here today I didn’t believe in God, and my heart was full of hate. But now I am leaving here believing in God. I have seen the love of God in action. Through the hands of that Sister, through her tenderness, through her gestures, which were so full of love for that wretched man, I have seen God’s love descend upon him. Now I believe”. This is surely an example of the kind of thing Jesus had in mind. When he tells us that we must let our light shine, the light he is talking about is the light of our good deeds, especially our deeds of love. People take notice of deeds. Our deeds don’t have to as spectacular as the above example. Generally they will be much more ordinary. But that doesn’t mean they can’t give effective witness to the light. When Jesus tells us to let our light shine before people, he doesn’t mean that we should advertise our good deeds, much less boast about them. He is asking us to do them. If we do them they will speak for themselves. A good life is a strong and effective witness, and in itself is a proclamation of the Gospel.

Reflection
The Canticle of Simeon forms a beautiful part of the Office of Night Prayer recited by priests, religious and laity throughout the world. The elderly Simeon’s prayer begins ‘At last, all powerful Master, you give leave to your servant to go in peace according to your promise’. Peace at the end of one’s days is never guaranteed. One palliative care nurse recalls the five biggest regrets of the dying: not having been true to myself; working too hard; not having expressed my feelings; having lost touch with friends; not having allowed myself to be happier.
Are these still preventable for me?
