Sunday Reflection – Advent: A Time of Hope

It is said that while there is life, there is hope.

This has even deeper meaning in reverse:

While there is hope there is life.

Hope comes first, life follows on.

Hope gives power to life, for hope is strength.

Hope sheds light into millions of despairing hearts.

It is the miracle medicine of the mind.

It inspires the will to live.

It is the doctor’s most powerful ally.

Advent summons us to wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Saviour Jesus Christ.

Lord, in the final analysis, you are our only hope.

Last week was an historic occasion in the Diocese with the appointment of our New Archbishop Kieran O Reilly.  Archbishop O Reilly was born in Cork, educated at Coláiste Chríost Rí, he enterd the SMA in Wilton, was ordained for the Society in 1978.  He served in Liberia for two years before studying for a licentiate in Sacred Scripture in Rome.  From 1984 – 1989; he lectured Scripture at the Seminary in Nigeria.  In May 2010 he was appointed by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI as Bishop of Killaloe.  Welcoming his appointment Archbishop Clifford said that he is a scholar I learned from others, that he is a gentleman I have found out for myself.  While Archbishop Eamon Martin of Armagh said I have come to know the warmth of his personality and his gentleness and pastoral sensitivity.  Archbishop O Reilly will be installed in Thurles Cathedral on Sun 8th Feb 2015.  We look forward to his visit to us for Confirmation on 21st April & 150 Year Celebration of St. Mary’s on 30th Aug 2015.

Sunday Refction

The nineteenth centry English convert, Fr. Frederick W.; is perhaps best known for his composition of Faith of Our Fathers.  However, another of his hymns, which speaks of God’s limitless mercy, communicates an even more powerful message.  ‘There’s a wideness in God’s mercy like the wideness of the sea’.  Faber notes, however, that ‘we make his love too narrow by false limits of our own; and we magnify his strictness with a zeal he will not own’.  And so we create a God who reflects our sense of justice rather than his.  To paraphrase Voltaire: God made us in his image and likeness – and we have repaid the compliment.

Sincere Thanks-

Sunday Reflection— A prayer on Visiting the Church

Outside this Church the noisy traffic flows past.

People rush hither and thither.

But I have left that world behind and I am here before you.

I do not exclude my brothers and sisters.

I bring them with me,

for I know that they are equally dear to you.

I have nothing.

But I feel that I have everything since I have you.

I close my mind and open my heart, and so I am at peace.

There are so many people in the world with whom one feels at peace.

But I feel at peace here with you.

Here I experience my true worth, which consists,

not in my possessions or achievements,

but in knowing that I am loved by you.

Here I grow like corn in the sun.

In this oasis I encounter you, Lord.

Here I am nourished with the mysterious food

which alone can satisfy the hunger

The heavenly Father has put in my heart.

Final Prayer:

Father, here in your house our roads come together and our paths meet.  Here we lay down our differences and become one family.  Here we are in from the cold and experience a little of the warmth of human friendship and community.  Grant that as we leave we may not take up out differences again.  Rather let us try to live as brothers and sisters who care about one another.  We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Remembering our Dead – November

During the Masses this Weekend, you will be invited to light a candle for those you wish to remember during this month of November.  These candles will be lit each of the 5 weekends.  Candles will be available at the porches of the Churches.

R: We remember them

In the rising of the sun, and in its going down                       R

In the blowing of the wind, and in the chill

of the winter                                                                           R

In the opening of the buds, and in the rebirth

of the spring                                                                            R

In the blueness of the sky, and in the warmth

of Summer                                                                              R

In the rustling of the leaves, and in the beauty of

Autumn                                                                                   R

In the beginning of the year and when it ends                       R

When we are weary and in need of strength                          R

When we are lost and sick at heart                                         R

When we have joys and we yearn to share                             R

When we have decisions that are difficult to make                R

When we have achievements that are based on theirs            R

Prayer:

All: Lord God, it is your will that we come together today to pray for and remember all our departed loved ones and friends. We gather in your presence, confident of your abundant mercy and love.  We ask you to listen to our prayers, to ease our sadness and to bring our brothers and sisters to their eternal reward.

We ask this through Christ Our Lord.  Amen

Reflection for Sunday

God’s call comes to us,

not so much as a voice in our ears,

as a tug at our hearts.

There is something missing in everybody’s life.

However, a sense of something missing is not a curse but a blessing.

It is God’s way of inviting us to his banquet.

One Sentence Sermon:

My entire life can be described in one sentence: “It didn’t go as planned and that’s ok”

Sunday Reflection

The Second Reading today speaks of the significance of what we allow to enter our minds.  It encourages us to feed our minds with whatever is true; whatever is lovely; whatever is admirable; whatever is excellent.  And it offers the promise that the peace of God will ‘guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus’. And yet we also know that many people have little control over what enters their minds on account of conditions such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and other mental health issues. Let us remember today all for whom the daily thoughts of the mind are a constant struggle.

Celebrated annually by the Catholic Church in Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales.  A day dedicated to celebrating the dignity of life from conception to natural death, this year focuses on the theme: Protect and Cherish Life.  It seems a little strange that we have a need for a Day for Life – a day when we are reminded, bring to mind the importance and  sacredness of life.  Life seems to be the one precious gift that we can easily take for granted until something   happens to remind us how fragile it is.Whether it is a sudden death, watching with horror the reactions of the families of those on Flight MH17 or the daily atrocities of those suffering in Gaza.  The readings today remind us we have a mission to live, celebrate, cherish and protect the life we are given.

Sunday Gospel The approach of death has a way of concentrating the mind.  It is intersting how many of the Great Christians realised their utter inadequacy before they died.  Having laboured on his masterpieces, the Summa Theologica, Thomas Aquinas declared all he had written to be mere straw.  On his death-bed, Martin Luther would write Wirsind bettler – hoc est verum    (‘We are beggars – this is true’).  And Thérése of Lisieux prayed ‘In the evening of life, I shall appear before you with empty hands…’ How true it is that ‘a saint is a sinner who realises his or her needs of God’.

Sunday Thought

It is in forgiving that we ourselves are forgiven.

Two Stories:

1)  Once two prisoners shared the same cell.  A dank, dark cell it was. One of them was a strong, crude individual.  The other was gentle and timid.  The prisoners were handcuffed to one another.  The strong man was mean and cruel to the timid man.  One day, while his companion was asleep, the timid man found the key to the cell.  He desperately   wanted to get away from this horrible cell.  But at the same time he had no wish to do any favours to his obnoxious companion.  However, he soon    realised he could not set himself free unless he also set his companion free.

2)It is like two people living in the same room, one of whom closes the blind because he doesn’t want the other to enjoy the sunlight.  But in so doing he also deprives himself of the sunlight.

Reflection

‘O that today you would listen to his voice.

Harden not your hearts.’

To adopt a hard-hearted attitude is to maim oneself.

A hard heart is a closed heart, so it can’t receive.

A hard heart inevitably becomes a barren heart.

A soft heart, on the other hand, is a blessing.

A soft heart can receive and can respond.

Lord, grant that softened by the rain of your grace, and warmed by the sun of your love, our hearts may be turned from a desert into a garden.

What would an advertisement for Christianity look like?  If you had to design an ad to sum up your faith, what would you include?  On the one hand we are called to be joyful, to sing, to shout, clap our hands and rejoice.  But faith is not always so straightforward.  There are many obstacles and temptations and sometimes we are afraid to stand up for what we believe in.  Lord Kindle in our Hearts the Fire of your Love.

Start of the New School Year

As the Summer Holidays come to an end, we say thanks to God for the fun they brought and for the time together.  We pray for our children going back to school.  We pray for the boys and girls who are starting school.  We ask God to bless all parents.

We think of all for whom September marks a new start – at study, at college / university, at work, at home – we ask God to bless us with the grace of new beginnings.

We thank God for the joy of life, for the   people we love, for the memories we create, for all that there is to look forward to.

Short But Sweet – The kids had talked Mom into getting a hamster. They promised to take care of their pet, which they named Paddy.  Within two months, though, Mom was taking care of Paddy.  One day Mom decided enough was enough; Paddy would be given to a new owner.  She called the kids together to tell them.  One child said, I’ll miss him.  He’s been around here a long time”.  The other chid remarked, “Maybe he could stay if he ate less and wasn’t so messy”.  Mom was firm, “ It is time to take Paddy to a new home”.   The kids wailed, “We thought you said Daddy”.

If it’s important to you, you will find a way, if not, you’ll find an excuse.

Short But Sweet – Henry Ford once asked a young car engineer to name his chief ambition in life. The young man said it was to become very rich. Everything else was secondary.  Sometime later Mr Ford gave the employee a small package. When opened, it contained a pair of glasses, but in place of lenses was a pair of silver dollars. “Put them on,” Ford requested.  And the young man did.  “Now what do you see?” Ford asked.  And the young man did.  “Now what do you see? Ford asked.   “Nothing” the engineer replied, “the money blocks out everything.”  “Maybe you should rethink that ambition of yours,” said the famous car maker, and walked away.

 Stained Glass Windows Committee Meeting

On Tuesday 29th July at 7pm in St. Mary’s Hall.

Agenda:- Decision on the kind of protection to be erected on windows – mesh or glass.  Protective Glazing vs Stainless Steel Grills.  Protecting stained glass can be a two edged sword.  Many Churches around Ireland are covered with a variety of types of protective glazing ranging from plastics to glass to metal grills of copper,     galvanised steel and stainless steel.  Without a shadow of doubt, black powder coated stainless steel grills offer an  excellent form of protection against most forms of vandalism and accidental mishaps that threaten stained glass.  Black powder coated grills blend in perfectly with historic architecture, and should be promoted as such.  In addition black powder coated stainless steel grills do not need to be replaced every time they are struck by a projectile.  On the other hand even the most structurally sound stained glass windows are no match against extreme inclement weather.  Properly installed protective glazing, using laminated safety glass, offers protection against: inclement weather, severe vandalism and an area in need of further study is the degree to which protective glazing helps buildings retain heat, by acting as a crude form of double-glazing.  The retention of heat in a building should not be confused with the damaging effects caused to stained glass through exposure to sunlight via improperly vented exterior glazing.  Sun, shining through the protective glazing can cause extreme temperature fluctuations and it has never been suggested that this background heat could distort stained glass.  Therefore the retention of heat produced by a church’s heating system may at least considered a potentially positive attribute of protective glazing.  (Report from Richard Kimball – Contractor).

Also we have been granted an additional €3,600 by Tipperary County Council to progress to starting a 2nd window immediately.

Reflection

The First Reading today beautifully depicts the Word of God as a life-giving word going forth from Heaven to water and give life anew to the earth, making it fruitful once more.

How often in our daily lives do we silently wish that we could be replenished, rejuvenated, renewed? The ancient monastic practice of Lectio Divina encourages us to take a word or line of Scripture which speaks to us and make it our own, returning to it for nourishment during the week.  It also speaks of repeatedly ‘chewing’ the Word.  Which line of Scripture will be your oasis over the coming days?

Slieveardagh Rural Development Graveyard’s Mapping Project.

Slieveardagh Rural Dev have undertaken a large project over the last 2 years which will be ongoing.  All the graveyards in the Slieveardagh Area (which consists of Killenaule, Ballingarry, The Commons, Ballynonty, Ballinure & Moyglass) will be mapped and then uploaded to a national website www.historicgraves.ie

Crosscannon & River Street Graveyards are completed and work is being undertaken in St. Mary’s Church Graveyard at the present time.  This is very time consuming as pictures of all gravestones are taken and all information written down.  This is then uploaded to the site and persons all over the world can search for their ancestors.  The work is never fully completed and needs to be updated annually therefore this is an ongoing project that is of extreme benefit to all.  Keep an eye on the above website when tracing your Family Tree.

Touching the Heart – Vocation’s Sunday

Some stories catch your attention, and some strike a chord.  One story apparently took place in a leper colony somewhere on the ‘foreign missions’, as they were then called. An American visitor to the colony was watching a religious sister clean and dress the sores of a leper. The American could not bear to watch and admitted that he would not do what the   Sister did for a million dollars.  The good sister smiled and said, ‘Neither would I, I do it for Christ!’  That is what healing means for Christ.  It means touching the heart.  He reads the thoughts of your heart, more than the words of your mouth.  He understands you.

PARISH OF KILLENAULE / MOYGLASS

In response to an invitation to all parishes across the Diocese of Cashel & Emly to prepare for  priest-less parishes, a group of six volunteers from this parish, attended six training sessions at  St. Patrick’s College Thurles, in September / October 2013.  Subsequently the team has been meeting to prepare MISSION and VISION statements.  This is a draft copy of these statements and we invite YOU to ponder these and offer any suggestions YOU may have so that we get a more comprehensive understanding of this Parish’s needs into the future.

MISSION STATEMENT

We are a faith community, part of the wider family of God.

Guided by the Holy Spirit we are on a journey, searching, struggling to live by the simplicity and joy of the Gospel and are invited to follow the example of the Good Shepherd.

VISION STATEMENT

Our Parish will become a place where:

  • There is openness, warmth and welcome.
  • Our priority is to deepen our relationship with God.
  • Our love of God and love of neighbour is the corner stone of our faith.
  • Our Sacramental celebrations are enriching and joyful.
  • Our inherited faith is very important to us and we hope that inheritance will be equally valued by those who follow us.
  • ALL Parishioners will feel listened to, and be invited and encouraged to become    involved in any discussions about the future of our parish.
  • Our practical living of the Gospel values will inspire others to join us on our faith journey.

We encourage you to take this bulletin home with you today, to reflect upon its contents over the coming week, and make any suggestions that you feel will add to this ongoing process, and then return them to the boxes provided in the Church porches.

Thank You – Fr. Jimmy, Fr. Danny & The Pastoral Group.

Reflection

Psychologist Abraham Maslow tells this story of a young mother.

One morning she was getting breakfast for her young family.

The kitchen was filled with sunlight, her children were laughing and talking, and her husband was playing with the littlest one.

As she scurried about spreading jam on toast and pouring orange juice, she was overwhelmed with joy and love for her family. Tears filled her eyes and she became so choked up that she could hardly speak.

____________________

Maslow calls such a moment as this a peak moment.

It’s a moment when for a few precious seconds or minutes we see an ordinary event in an extraordinary way.

It’s a moment when God seems to shine through the things around us and we glimpse another world beyond this one.

The Two Most Important Days in Your Life are the Day you are Born and the Day you find out Why

Story  A Priest who spent several years as a school chaplain tells the following story.

Late one night one of his past pupils, now a young man, came to see him.  He had a sad and murky story to tell.  After leaving school he entered the world of work.  There, unfortunately, he got involved in crime / drugs.  He told the priest that he now wanted to get out of it.  Then he made a most unusual request.  If I could turn back the clock and make me the boy I was when I was fifteen.  The young man knew that he had tarnished himself.  Now he felt a longing for the     unstained innocence of his boyhood.  Just as Adam and Eve lost their original innocence, so that young man had lost his innocence.  There is in every human heart a longing for the lost Eden.  When the Lord says to us, ‘Unless you become like little children you will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven”, he is recalling us to our lost childhood.  No matter how old we may be, he makes it possible for us to be reborn in innocence of character.

Reflection

There are two equally unhelpful approaches to recognising who we are and where we have come from.  One emphasises that we are mere dust (and so should not ‘get notions’, a favourite Irish Phrase!).  Another, more recently in favour, is that we are nothing less than star-dust (which apparently constitutes about 93% of our mass!) and our potential is limitless.True humility (from the Latin humus meaning ‘earth’) is more properly ‘grounded’ in reality.  And yet, too often in the past we have denied our potential and that of others out of a false sense of humility, which really served no-one.

Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.”  Mother Theresa

Story

There was a town in which the people were terrible worriers. They called a meeting to see what they could do about the problem of worry. One person suggested that the town should have a park where people could relax. A second suggested that it should have a golf course. A third suggestion that it should have a cinema. And so it went on.  Finally a man got up and said “I’ve just thought of a simpler solution. Why don’t we ask David, the town

cobbler, to do our worrying for us.” “Wait a minute” said David.  “Why pick on me?” “Because if you agree, we’ll make it worth your while. We’ll pay you €500 a week.” “Well in that case, why not me?” David exclaimed. Everybody agreed that the idea was a good one.  However, just as the motion was about to be put to a vote, this fellow got up and said, “Wait a minute!  If David earned €500 a week, what would he have to worry about?” A good question. But since he was a worrier just like the rest of them, I’m sure he would have found something. Worriers always do. According to a survey, the most common worries people have are:

Money                                                45%    Other People               32%

Exams                                                 20%     Job Security                15%
